The media leads us to believe that becoming a parent should be a positive and exciting time in our lives. But many mums are left feeling overwhelmed, anxious and depressed during pregnancy or after the birth of their child. Dads and other carers can also be affected.
Issues experienced include depression, anxiety, worry, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Many parents feel very alone when in fact research suggests that up to one in seven women will experience anxiety or depression during pregnancy or after birth. Women often talk about feeling a huge sense of guilt at not being able to enjoy this unique time in their life.
CBT can help parents work through these issues and find a way to feel less stuck and overwhelmed. Many people find it difficult to talk about their situation but therapy offers the space to chat openly and honestly.
